The Real Cost of Raising Grass-Fed Beef

Okay—no one has really asked this question, but I wanted to bring it up because the success of this program will ultimately determine how sustainable our farm can be.

The truth is, this program is a lot more work for us than taking the conventional route. We have more animals to manage, more relationships to nurture, and a lot more moving parts.

So why do it?

Because we genuinely believe the benefits are worth it.

For you, it means the opportunity to build a real connection with your food, your farmers, and the land that nourishes both.

For us, it creates a way to farm that is actually sustainable.

Our cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, which means each animal spends about two years on our farm before harvest. Caring for a single calf over that time represents a multi-four-figure investment. Long before we ever sell a single steak, we’ve already invested thousands of dollars into pasture management, fencing, mineral, veterinary care, water systems, and, most significantly, hay to feed the herd through our long Canadian winters.

When you become a Herdshare Owner, you’re not simply pre-purchasing beef. You’re providing the working capital that allows us to keep those animals on our farm, feeding them through the winter and giving them the time they need to grow naturally on grass.

Instead of relying on loans or lines of credit to bridge that gap, we have a dream where we partner directly with the people who believe in what we’re building.

That support doesn’t just help raise one animal—it helps build a farm that’s healthier, more resilient, and able to keep producing nourishing food for our community for years to come.
